After an impressive goalless draw with the tournament’s defending champion team Mexico on July 10, the national senior men’s team, under new head coach Angus Eve, a former national Gold Cup standout player himself, the Soca Warriors who went down to El Salvador 2-0 on Wednesday night, need a victory if the team is to force its way into the quarterfinal stages of the tournament.
It will not be easy as the Soca Warriors will need to win by no less than three clear goals and will need help from El Salvador, the group leader to win big against Mexico in the other match on the night’s programme which is also kicking off at the same.

Central defender Radanfah Abu Bakr, who had an outstanding game against Mexico said that T&T is going all out for the win.
He said: “We want to focus solely on us. We have a chance of qualifying for the next round and they only way we can do that is winning the game. We just want to focus on our performance and get that positive result.
“We are confident in what we are doing and in what the coach is putting forward to us. We just want to be confident and execute the game plan.”
Ahead of the Sunday’s Group A match against the Guatemalans,, Abu Bakr said,” In terms of the game, it will be a tough fixture, playing against Guatemala is always difficult. They’re already out but that gives them the freedom to play freely and that’s always dangerous playing a team who free to play however they like.

“In terms of what we have achieved so far, it’s a good start, good steps in the right direction. We brought some respectability back to the football.”
Following Wednesday’s defeated Eve said, “We’re disappointed in the result obviously but I think there is a lot of encouragement in the performance of the team, against one of the teams who would’ve qualified proper for the Gold Cup and probably they were a bit fresher than us.”
T&T’s Kevin Molino, who wore the captain’s arm-band against El Salvador said, “I thought it was a much-improved performance in the second half and probably we deserved to get a little bit more out of the game, but it augurs well for the work that we have been doing in a short space of time.”
Coach Eve will have his full squad, including Triston Hodge, who is available for selection.
